Lifejackets
What you must carry
You must carry a correctly sized life jacket or personal floatation device (PFD) for each person on board.
Lifejackets or PFD's must be readily accessible - this means they may not be stowed in a hard to get to place.
What you must do
In vessels less than 6 metres in length everyone on board must wear a lifejacket unless the skipper considers that it is safe not to.
Lifejackets or PFD must be worn if there are high risks to people's safety. Examples of high risk situations include:
- crossing a river bar
- being towed
- boating at night
- bad / rough weather
- low visibility
- an emergency
- high river flows
- when riding a jet ski (or PWC)
For further information see the lifejacket rules in the Navigation Safety Bylaw.
